FAQs

What are Dorr signs made from?

At Dorr Woodcarving & Sign Co. we use materials that are best suited to each project. High density urethane (HDU) or Sign Foam is our most common material. HDU does not warp, crack or check. HDU is made of recycled products and carves just like wood. Mahogany is not sustainable and has quality issues. We will use clear native pine and teak if applicable. All materials are carefully selected to ensure a quality and long lasting finished product.

How long will my sign last?

The sun (and harsh weather) is the biggest culprit contributing to the aging process of a sign. The painted finishes on our signs will last from 10 to 15 years depending on the exposure. South-facing signs, for instance, will fade faster than a north-facing sign. Your hand carved sign can always be re-finished over time so actually it’s life time is indefinite. Helpful hint – for 2 sided signs, turn the sign around every 2 years to ensure equal weathering.

How much will it cost?

The cost of a carved sign is determined by three factors 1) size, 2) complexity of design and 3) whether the sign is single or double sided. Double-sided signs are approximately 80% more than a single sided sign. Contact us with your specifications for a free preliminary estimate.

How long does it take?

The design & manufacturing process of a hand carved sign typically takes 6 to 8 weeks.
